Levaquin (levofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. It is used for the treatment of bacterial infections of kidneys, bladder, prostate, skin, as well as to treat pneumonia, bronchitis and patients exposed to anthrax. Do not take Levaquin if you are allergic to levofloxacin or similar antibiotics. Tell your doctor about having liver or kidney disease, diabetes, low potassium levels in the blood, joint problems, myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, seizures or a history of Long QT syndrome.

Take Levaquin with a full glass of water and make sure you get plenty of fluids during the day. If you are using the liquid form of this drug make sure you have a special measuring spoon to make sure your dosage is accurate. Levaquin can cause sensitivity to sun light. Avoid staying outside for a long period of time; otherwise, make sure you wear protective clothing and apply some sun screen. One of the rare side effects of Levaquin is tearing of the tendon (fiber connecting bones to the muscles). It’s often reported by patients older than 60, those taking steroid medications, as well as people with kidney, lung or heart transplant.
